Foundations of Realist Oil Painting
FEBRUARY 22 & 23, 2025
1-6 pm
1-6 pm
Learn the fundamentals of realist oil painting. This 2-day intensive workshop will equip you with the knowledge and skills to dive deeper into this boundless medium, from materials to techniques, colour mixing and matching, and ways of approaching and seeing the subject.
Who is this course for?
While this class is well suited for beginners, all skill levels are welcome and can benefit from brushing up on the fundamentals of oil painting. The course includes many demos and one-on-one instruction and feedback. Regardless of your level, you will learn something new to enhance your painting practice!
Day 1: Seeing and Painting Values
The first part of the course focuses on basic techniques to start a painting, tonal values, working from a reference photo, blocking in shapes, and applying paint to create depth and volume. It includes warm-up exercises, demos, and a longer grayscale painting practice. We will all work from the same reference image which will be chosen together as a group on the day of the workshop.
Day 2: Painting With Colours
The second day, we bring in a limited palette to practice mixing and matching colours. We cover basic colour theory, colour keys, and a range of techniques to build form with values, chromas, and hues. Again, the day is structured around warm-up exercises, demos, and a longer practice from a reference image.
A list of required and suggested materials will be provided upon registration.

"Anne Sophie's oil painting workshop was the best learning experience I have had with regards to learning principles of painting. Her method of teaching, paired with her knowledge, skill and talent, highlight her commitment and passion for painting. Her two day workshop gave me the creative confidence I needed as an artist and the tools to help me practice and hone my skills." - Andres
"Did the last workshop. It was very fun, informative and inspiring! Even as an acrylic artist going to oils, I learned more than the use of a new medium! I highly recommend Anne-Sophie and her classes!" - Marie-Anna
